Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are an everyday convenience in our lives. From cell phones to automobiles, society has embraced the technology enthusiastically.

The technology is not without its hazards. LIBs have emerged as a significant fire threat, causing millions of dollars in property loss and killing dozens of people across the country.

The greatest threat from LIBs is thermal runaway, a condition where the batteries overcharge, ignite explosively, and create thick clouds of poisonous gases.

There are ways to reduce the hazard.
⁃ Be sure your device is UL tested. This single step alone will significantly reduce the likelihood of a fire. UL tested devices give you the confidence the batteries are well constructed and built to a rigorous standard.
⁃ Look for a charging system that wil shut down when the batteries are charged.
⁃ If the charger is not equipped with an automatic shut off, be sure to turn the charger off when the battery is fully charged.
⁃ If the batteries are damaged, replace them or the device immediately.
⁃ Be sure to dispose of the batteries properly when they have reached the end of life or are damaged. Consult your local regulations for proper disposal.

LIB fueled technology is here to stay. The improvements on our quality of life is immeasurable. Treating LIBs with respect, knowing the hazards, and following simple rules of storage, operation, maintenance and care will ensure years of pleasure.
