| Twenty-five years ago today, our nation changed forever. Today, we hold in our hearts all the victims, the families who lost loved ones, and the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice while running toward danger to save others. As we reflect on this milestone anniversary, we honor those lost in the immediate response: 343 members of the FDNY, 71 law enforcement officers, eight paramedics, and 55 military personnel at the Pentagon.
Yet, the sacrifices did not end when the smoke cleared. The long-lasting, devastating impact of that tragedy continues to claim lives today. A recent report from the FDNY notes that 600 firefighters have now died from WTC-related diseases since 9/11. In total, more than 5,000 people—both first responders and civilians—enrolled in the WTC Health Program have succumbed to related illnesses, a heartbreaking toll expected to grow by several thousand more.
We will never forget their bravery, their sacrifice, or their enduring legacy. We will always honor them through our continued service to protect one another and by supporting those who are still fighting the effects of that fateful day. |
