Fire in Marsh on New Year’s Day

January 2, 2026

At 1839 hours (6:39pm), Calvert County Emergency Communications Center dispatched Companies 1 (North Beach) and 5 (Dunkirk) for a brush fire threatening structures in the 8700blk of Bayside Road. First arriving Engine 11 encountered two areas of marsh grass on fire approximately ten feet from the property lines of homes on Bayside Road and D Street in Chesapeake Beach.

The engine crew circled around to D Street where they dropped a 4” supply line from the hydrant at 1st and D, proceeded to the dead end, advanced two 1 1/2” attack lines and quickly contained the fire.

Brush 1 responded shortly after Engine 11 and took a position between the houses and marsh on Bayside, providing fire attack and exposure protection for the property abutting the marsh.

Engine 12 responded in lieu of Tower 1 due to the nature of the incident and provided water supply to Engine 11 and staffing to assist with fire attack.

Chief 1A had command.

The fire was quickly contained to an area approximately 50’ x 200’ by the North Beach crews on the scene. Units operated for approximately 90 minutes, checking for hot spots, wetting down the area, addressing a sizable tree that was involved in the fire, and picking up hose. There were no injuries and no structures were damaged.

The cause of the fire is undetermined.

Your NBVFD appreciates the outpouring of gratitude extended to our members by the community. We’d like to remind everyone to be careful with smoking materials and fireworks around the marsh grass as it is highly combustible. In addition, please leave ample room around fire hydrants so our crews can have clear access when needed.
